The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) has strengthened its emergency response capabilities following the handover of specialised Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) equipment by the Western Cape Government.
The investment forms part of the Fire Service Capacity Building Programme, which has allocated R7.5 million over the three-year Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) to enhance Hazmat operational readiness along major transport routes across the province.
The equipment includes advanced detection and monitoring devices, leak-sealing and containment systems, as well as Level A and Level B personal protective equipment designed to support firefighters during complex and high-risk incidents.
Since 2016, the programme has assisted municipalities through the donation, funding and co-funding of fire service resources, including 112 vehicles for the provincial fire service system.
CWDM also contributed funding towards the project, highlighting the value of collaboration between provincial and local government. The municipality’s IFSAC-accredited training centre will further support the initiative by providing specialised Hazmat training to ensure firefighters are equipped with the skills required to safely and effectively use the new equipment.
