Winelands Autumn Expo Debuts with Spectacular Sabrage Ceremony and Vibrant Festivities

The Winelands Autumn Expo had its memorable debut in the picturesque town of Worcester on May 24th and 25th, 2024. Visitors immersed themselves in the flavours, experiences, and celebrations that define the Cape Winelands District, all under one roof.

With a swift slide of the blade against the bottle of champagne and the sharp, resonant crack that followed, shearing off the neck and sending corks and collars flying away in a shower of effervescent bubbles, the inaugural Winelands Autumn Expo was officially opened. The technique of opening a bottle of MCC by sword is known as Sabrage and was executed by the skilled hands of Executive Mayor Ald (Dr.) Elna von Schlicht, Renate Kuschke (Robertson Tourism), and Mikyla Scholtz (Stettyn Family Wines).

Visitors were treated to award-winning wines, beers, and spirits, alongside delectable culinary delights, outdoor and camping equipment, thrilling adventures, and family-friendly activities displays. They could browse through a selection of products, including jewellery, clothes, furniture, toys, and more. More than 100 vendors showcased the hospitality of the Cape Winelands, including delicious food trucks and stalls ready to serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all while visitors grooved to live performances from Forest the Musician, Emo Adams, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Loufi, Tarryn Lamb, Eddy Strings, and Jeod House.

Kids enjoyed their own entertainment section and had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the CWDM Fire Services firefighters and their vehicles, including the massive and impressive Incident Command Bus.

For the Cape Winelands District Municipality and their partner, Breede Valley Municipality, the primary objective was not only to showcase the diverse offerings of the Cape Winelands District but also to foster an environment conducive to sustainable economic growth. Executive Mayor von Schlicht explained, “Our goal is to uplift communities and create a space where entrepreneurs from the region have an opportunity to exhibit their products to the public, offering a stepping stone in their growth.”

The Expo also offered exciting opportunities to win incredible prizes. The Ultimate Expo Weekend prize went to Thelma and Xagene de Villiers, who enjoyed a stay at Summerhill Farm, free entry to the expo, and an amazing horse outride. The two unforgettable Winelands Weekend getaways were awarded to Hein and Lee Reyneke, who won the Romantic Getaway, and Alistair and Melissa Africa, who won the Family Getaway. Additionally, spot prizes were awarded throughout the festivities, adding to the excitement and enjoyment for attendees.

The success of the Expo, determined by the sale of more than 2,500 tickets, was not a solitary endeavour; rather, it was the product of dedicated teamwork and robust partnerships. “In our commitment to sustainability, the CWDM has allocated funding to ensure that the Expo has the best opportunity to grow into a self-sufficient event over the next five years.” explained Municipal Manager Henry Prins.

The success of the inaugural event has cemented the possibility of bringing the Wineland Autumn Expo to the region annually. Rotating the venue, allowing each municipal area the opportunity to reap the benefits of this showcase. We look forward to bringing you even more of what the Cape Winelands has to offer in 2025.
