On Friday, 5 July 2024, the Cape Winelands District Disaster Management team, in coordination with local municipalities and the Provincial government, went on high alert following a severe weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service for Sunday, 7 July 2024. The district experienced significant adverse weather conditions throughout the following week. Heavy downpours and strong winds resulted in extensive flooding and infrastructure damage, leading to road closures and evacuations.
The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) Fire Services assisted with evacuations in Newton, Wellington. Due to disruptive heavy rains and concerns over rising water levels at the Bo-Dal Dam, a pre-emptive evacuation was initiated for certain parts of the Newton community. A team of 35 individuals, including members from Cape Winelands Fire Services, Drakenstein Fire Services, the South African Police Services, Cape Winelands Disaster Management, and Law Enforcement, successfully evacuated approximately 2,390 people within four hours.
In addition to the Newton community, thousands of other residents were relocated due to flooding or the threat thereof across the district. Many of those displaced sought refuge in community spaces. Our Disaster Management team supported the displaced individuals by providing 50 mattresses, 200 blankets, 28 food parcels, and hot meals to approximately 500 people accommodated in shelters in Drakenstein and Breede Valley from 10-15 July 2024.
Alongside our Disaster Management and Fire Services teams, our Roads team also worked tirelessly during the severe weather to ensure the safety and accessibility of our roads for our communities.
We commend the swift response and coordination of all involved in ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents during this challenging time.
