The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Drakenstein Municipality and the Cape Winelands Elderly Forum hosted the District Golden Games recently at the Dal Josafat Athletics Stadium in Paarl on Thursday, 22 May 2025.Senior citizens from forums across the Cape Winelands District, were buzzing with energy and excitement as they gathered.
The Golden Games is a sport and wellness event designed to encourage active ageing. It is not just a competition. It is a way of empowering the elderly; it encourages them to stay active and develops their self-esteem. By participating in sports, it improves their physical and psychological well-being, their social skills, and helps maintain their independence.
After a few days of rainy weather, the sun made its appearance which set the tone for a beautiful day ahead. The stand was filled with senior citizens – laughing, cheering, singing! It reminded us of high schools interschools, but instead of students, we had seasoned legends participating.
Seniors took part in different events which included a brisk walk, athletics, jukskei, other indigenous games, and the always fun dress-up race! These events were filled with lots of laughter and determination and a strong sense of community spirit.
The champs of the District Golden Games are ready to take the heat and their energy to the next level at the National Golden Games.
This once again, proves that age is just a number —and you’re never too old to compete, celebrate, and be part of something amazing. 💪🏅
