Executive Mayor Ald (Dr) Elna von Schlicht, along with Cllr Deon Carinus (Technical Services Portfolio Holder) and representatives from Stellenbosch Municipality, surprised the Grade 7 classes of Vlottenburg Primary in Stellenbosch and Wes-Eind Primary in Franschhoek with stationery packs ahead of their move to high school next year.
The Mayor took the opportunity to explain the three spheres of government and ended with a quick pop quiz, giving away some additional prizes to the learners. Eager hands shot up with each question. The Mayor left the learners with some encouraging words, “You are our future nation. You need to focus on your education, aim for Grade 12 and beyond because you can become whoever and whatever you want, and brighten up the future of our country.”
The stationery packs included items such as pens, pencils, notebooks, flip files, a calculator, highlighters, rulers, a pencil bag, and a math set, all put together in a drawstring bag for the learners’ use. The schools will hold on to these packs for the learners until the end of the year. Additionally, several identified schools across the district will receive similar stationery packs.
Cllr Carinus who drives the project, stated “We hope to help boost the confidence of the learners as they move to this new chapter by making sure they have the right tools to start it with.”
