CWDM and Community Safety agree on Safety Plan
“The safety of our citizens remains one of our main concerns, people need to be safe so that they can work, go to school and be safe in their homes. Safety is also a huge factor in economic development and investment, investors want to build factories and develop opportunities for job creation in areas where their investment will be free of crime. It is vital that we partner to address and find ways to solve the issues that lead to crime.” Stated the Executive Mayor, Ald (Dr) Elna von Schlicht at the signing ceremony.
The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) held a small ceremonial signing of the Review of the Cape Winelands Community Safety Plan for the 2022/2023 financial year. The plan forms part of a wider strategy to address community safety and was reviewed and approved by die Department of Community Safety following stakeholder engagement across the district. A steering committee consisting of representatives from all the local Municipalities will be responsible for the implementation of the various projects.
The Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen together with the Head of Department of Community Safety, Adv. Yasmina Pillay attended the signing. Minister Allen commented, “I’d like to thank the Cape Winelands District Municipality for prioritising safety in this manner. As the Western Cape Government, we require all stakeholders, and more so at the local sphere of government to walk the crime fighting mile with us. At a District level, they are well positioned to look at matters from a broader, yet focussed view, as they know exactly what the safety needs are in each of the municipal areas that falls within their District boundaries. I am looking forward to working much closer with the district and finding further innovative ways to strengthen this partnership. Safety is everyone’s responsibility and the more we can work together, the better we will be placed to overcome any form of crime.”
