The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) and its partners proudly continue the tradition of hosting the annual Golden Games, a sporting event that has become a beloved highlight on the calendars of elderly forums and centres throughout the region.
On Tuesday 23 May 2023, Boland Park in Worcester buzzed with excitement as 1 500 senior citizens from 30 forums in the district enthusiastically participated in the Golden Games. The event not only offered a platform for friendly competition, but also created an atmosphere of pure enjoyment and fun.
The primary objective of the games is to promote physical and mental health among senior citizens, attracting members from elderly forums from across the Cape Winelands district. Participants engaged in various activities designed to encourage exercise, foster social connections, and ignite a spirit of healthy competition. From engaging in jukskei and pin the washing peg to a thrilling dress-up race and showcasing their speed with a brisk walk, the Golden Games provided a diverse range of opportunities for participants to demonstrate their vitality.
Hester Miller, an inspiring 96-year-old from Robertson, has been an avid participant in the Golden Games for years. Although she no longer competes, she emphasised the significance of the event, stating, “Participating in the Golden Games has always brought me immense joy. Even though I no longer participate actively, it remains an event I cannot afford to miss.”
Cllr Minnie Petersen, the Portfolio Holder for Rural and Social Development, expressed her delight in the success of the 2023 Golden Games, “These games generate maximum fun and enjoyment for our elderly citizens, while also serving as a platform for ‘active aging’ and promoting a healthy lifestyle. We aim to inspire all citizens, especially our young people, to adopt regular physical activity as part of their lives to unlock their full sporting potential.”
Despite a slight chill in the air, the weather favoured our esteemed senior citizens with clear skies and radiant sunshine echoing the vibrant joy that permeated the stadium.
