Helping Our Children Get to School Safely

Every school day, thousands of children across the Cape Winelands make their way to and from school, some walking long distances, others relying on public transport. While this is part of everyday life, it also comes with real risks. That’s why the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) is stepping up efforts to make every learner’s journey safer.

Our Safer Journey to School Strategy is all about protecting our children where it matters most, on the roads, sidewalks, and transport routes they use daily. Because no child’s education journey should begin or end in danger.

So, what are we doing differently?

We’re looking at the full picture, from safer road environments and better transport services to stronger law enforcement and ongoing monitoring. But one of our biggest priorities is something simple, practical, and powerful: visibility and awareness.

You may have seen learners wearing bright safety bibs, peak caps, or beanies. These aren’t just accessories, they help children stand out to drivers, especially in the early mornings and late afternoons. A small item can make a big difference in keeping a child safe.

Sometimes the most vulnerable children, are those who live on farms or outside of towns.  Cllr Jacques Kriel, portfolio holder for Technical Services and the team from Transport Regulation, spent a day making sure that the kids in the Langeberg town of Montagu are visible and aware of road safety rules.

We’re also working closely with local municipal law enforcement teams and the Provincial Department of Mobility to bring road safety education directly into schools. Through engaging sessions and easy-to-understand materials, learners are being empowered to make safer choices when walking or travelling.

At the same time, our teams are supporting law enforcement with branded safety gear and educational resources, helping to spread the message even further into communities.

This is a shared responsibility. Safer journeys to school don’t happen by chance, they happen when we all play our part. Whether it’s a driver slowing down near a school, a parent reminding a child to stay alert, or a learner proudly wearing their safety bib, very action counts.

Because at the end of the day, it’s about getting our children to school safely… and back home again.
