A little spring rain didn’t dampen the spirit of young female rugby players in the Cape Winelands on 12 September!
The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Rural and Social Development Unit hosted two rugby clinics in Worcester and Ceres, giving aspiring young female players the opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence and, most importantly, have fun on the rugby field.
The clinics attracted great interest, with girls from across the district taking to the field to learn from veteran rugby player Wayne Julies and coaches from the Boland Rugby Union.
The players spent the day practising their side steps, scrums, ball-handling techniques and evasion tactics. While some were a little shy when they first arrived, it wasn’t long before the laughter started, friendships were made and the competitive spirit came out!
Deputy Mayor of the Cape Winelands District Municipality, Ald Margeret Sampson, said that while opportunities such as these would help level the playing field for the future of women in rugby, their value extended far beyond the sport itself.
“More importantly, it will help boost the confidence and skills of young women in sport. The lessons learned today will help enhance young women in any sport that they wish to focus on.”
For Shenique Baadjies of Dagbreek Primary School, the day was all about enjoying the game and learning something new.
“I really enjoyed making new friends, playing a game and learning how to carry the ball properly.”
With plenty of enthusiasm, new skills and a few muddy boots thrown into the mix, the rugby clinics showed that sometimes all it takes is an opportunity to get girls onto the field and let them discover what they can do.
And judging by the smiles, the girls were more than ready for the challenge!
