District Golden Games empower and promote active citizenship.

The Cape Winelands District Municipality, in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and the Cape Winelands Elderly Forum, hosted the District Golden Games at the Dal Josaphat Stadium in Paarl East on 23 May 2024.

Clubs from across the district participated in a day filled with fun activities such as athletics, pegging washing pegs, jukskei, and other indigenous sports. The event aims to empower elderly citizens, promote their rights, and foster active citizenship within the community. The winners of the District Golden Games will advance to the provincial games to be held later this year.

Through sports, elderly participants enhance their self-esteem, positivity, independence, and social skills. Programmes such as the Golden Games motivate the elderly to adopt exercise as a way of life, thereby improving their physical and psychological well-being.

This initiative underscores the CWDM’s commitment to enhance the quality of life for elderly residents and to promote a vibrant, active community.
